A kitchen is often the main gathering space for family, friends, and hosting, making it the most used area in a home. This young family of four spent the majority of their time in the kitchen and noticed other areas of wasted space could be better used. Deslaurier’s acclaimed designer, Alanna Wharton, purposefully renovated their kitchen space to suit their gathering needs with style.

The Challenge

This family had a lot of divided and unused space which was separated by walls and created a closed-off atmosphere. They spent lots of time in their kitchen and hardly any time in the formal dining and living rooms. This meant that we needed to open up the space and make it more functional for their growing family.

The Game Plan 

To address this kitchen renovation, we opted for a large contemporary open-concept layout by eliminating dividing walls, combining unused rooms, and introducing functional seating. Additional seating was added at the end of the island, incorporating a practical bar area that repurposed the original formal dining space for expansion. 

This approach allowed us to add functional extra seating while achieving an extended island for an oversized kitchen appearance. We strategically broke the space into zones, designating a prep area and breakfast table to the right, and emphasizing a bar with ambiance on the left for a more relaxed and sociable experience.

The Result

A contemporary urban kitchen that showed sophistication and functionality. We seamlessly blended modern design elements with high-quality materials, ensuring a space that is both visually appealing and practical.

Cabinets and Doors
The kitchen features "Urban" slab door-style cabinets crafted from clear white oak, creating a clean and timeless look. The clear white oak material adds a touch of warmth to the space, creating a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. To complement this, the "Ragusa" slab door style cabinets, made from white and dark grey PET material, made a sleek and minimalist contrast. The combination adds depth to the overall kitchen design.

Counters, Backsplash, and Appliances
Quartz was a main focus in this kitchen, for both the countertops and the backsplash. The durable and low-maintenance quartz not only provides a practical surface for meal preparation but also adds to the kitchen's modern touch. The gas range, accompanied by a decorative range hood, became a focal point with industrial flair.

Oversized Island Usage
An oversized island featuring a quartz waterfall edge provided a contemporary twist. The island not only provides a large workspace for culinary use but also doubles as a gathering spot with seating for four, encouraging their family to gather and enjoy time together.

Bar Addition
Adjacent to the main cooking area, a modern bar area was created with a beverage center and floating shelving. This shows a  chic and accessible space for mixing drinks or enjoying a casual space. Shallow-depth base cabinets on the back of the island improved storage capacity so that every inch of the kitchen is utilized efficiently.

Overall, this urban kitchen is a perfect blend of modern design, quality materials, and functional features. It caters to both the practical needs of a contemporary lifestyle and the desire for a stylish and inviting culinary space for a family of four who spends their time together mostly in their kitchen.
